AHLIANREVIEWS: Yoei Double Layer Electric Lunch Box

Finally I have the time to update on this. Daughter and myself took turns to be sick. sigh...

Read in the papers about the craze on electric lunch box, similar to what happened to Happy Call frying pan. I bought that but was way too early before I started my blog so did not pen down my reviews.

There are so many different types to choose in the market so was quite confused as to which one to buy. I've seen Yoei brand around so when there was a promo; electric lunch box plus free yogurt maker at $59, I quickly bought it online.

The box that came with it looked big but the actual item is not. It is actually slimmer than the yogurt maker.

I bought the double layer electric lunch box thinking it would be more useful and cost effective to do more dishes at the same time. Actually even if you want to bring this to work, it is not bulky.

Below photo shows what is included in the whole set of double layer.

There are actually 3 layers / trays so you could whip up a simple meal for 1-2 persons. The last container or also the biggest container is quite deep so rice for 2-3 persons is also enough. Or perhaps can use that container to make soup.

The other 2 containers are for simpler dishes like steamed egg / fish / meat and vegetables or you can also use the smaller containers for rice if only 1 person eating.

One thing to take note when taking out the items from the box, paying attention to the measuring cup. It has a needle stuck at the bottom of the cap so please be cautious. The needle is meant to poke a hole on the eggs if you are making hard boiled egg so that it can cook faster.

I had my first attempt to cook something for lunch. not knowing how much time I needed to cook rice , steamed egg, I just put everything in and went to shower. The box automatically shuts off when the water dried up, which was around 10-15 mins. By now the steamed egg was cooked, but rice was not. So I put more water and let it steam for another 10-15 mins. This time the rice was cooked.

I normally do not like to cook because I do not like cleaning the dishes and kitchen afterwards. So you can see I just dumped whatever I could find in my kitchen to cook. My first attempt turned out quite well. :)

VERDICT: It will be useful if you have a small family like 2-3 members and eat simple, steamed food. The challenge is finding the right duration for cooking the different types of dishes. And washing up the containers were also much easier than conventional cooking when a lot of utensils would be involved. Since I got this with the yogurt maker at just $59.00 I would have to say it is very worthwhile. And really it is portable! :)
